Common Bolt Sizes and Uses in Construction Projects in Cebu

Cebu’s warm, humid, and coastal environment can be hard on metal fasteners. Bolts used near Lapu-Lapu, the South Road Properties, and other coastal areas may face moisture and salt carried by the air. Without the right material or protective coating, exposed bolts can corrode and weaken over time.

Size also matters. Hardware stores in Cebu carry metric bolts marked M6, M10, or M12, as well as imperial bolts marked 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2". Some sizes look almost identical, but their thread diameters and pitches are different. Forcing an M10 nut onto a 3/8" bolt, for example, can damage both threads and delay the job.

This guide explains common bolt sizes in Cebu, the jobs they may suit, and the bolt types found in many construction projects. Use it as a starting point when preparing your material list. Final bolt sizes, grades, spacing, and anchor depths for structural work must follow the project plans and the instructions of a licensed engineer.

How Bolt Sizes Are Measured

A bolt’s listed size normally tells you its diameter and length.

For an M12 × 100 mm bolt:

  • M12 means the threaded body has a nominal diameter of 12 mm.

  • 100 mm is the bolt length, usually measured from under the head to the tip.

For a 1/2" × 4" bolt:

  • 1/2" is the nominal diameter.

  • 4" is the length from under the head to the tip.

You’ll also need to check the thread pitch. Metric pitch is measured as the distance between threads, such as M10 × 1.5. Imperial threads are listed by threads per inch, such as 3/8"-16.

Metric and imperial sizes in the table below are only close comparisons. They aren’t exact equivalents and shouldn’t be mixed.

These examples don’t give a load rating. A larger diameter doesn’t automatically make a bolt suitable for structural work. Strength grade, steel type, thread condition, installation torque, edge distance, and the materials being joined all affect performance.

Choose a Material That Fits Cebu’s Climate

Finding the right diameter is only part of choosing construction bolts in the Philippines. The bolt material and finish also affect how long the connection may last.

Black or Uncoated Carbon Steel

Black iron or uncoated carbon-steel bolts are often chosen for indoor framing, machinery, and protected steel connections. They can provide good strength when the correct grade is used, but exposed carbon steel can rust quickly in damp or salty locations.

For concealed or indoor steelwork, the fastener and surrounding metal may need an approved protective coating. Don’t assume a coat of paint will make every bolt suitable for outdoor or coastal use.

Zinc-Plated Bolts

Zinc-plated bolts have a relatively thin protective layer and are often used for indoor fittings and mildly exposed projects. They may not provide the same protection as hot-dip galvanized fasteners in harsh outdoor conditions.

Check the actual finish before ordering. The words zinc-plated, galvanized, and hot-dip galvanized don’t always describe the same coating thickness or process.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Bolts

Hot-dip galvanizing covers steel with a thicker zinc-based coating. It’s commonly considered for outdoor frames, roofing supports, fencing, and other connections exposed to rain and humidity.

Air salinity, rainfall, humidity, temperature, and distance from the coast all affect the life of a galvanized coating. Locations very close to the shoreline need a project-specific review because salt exposure can be much more severe

Stainless-Steel Bolts

Grade 316 is often preferred over 304 in more aggressive chloride or marine environments. Even stainless steel isn’t corrosion-proof, so the exact grade and exposure level still matter. Four Common Bolt Types for Cebu Construction

1. Hex Bolts and Hexagonal Cap Screws

Hex bolts have six-sided heads that can be tightened with a wrench or socket. They’re used in metal frames, equipment, brackets, roof assemblies, and many general construction connections.

2. Expansion Bolts and Concrete Anchors

Expansion anchors are installed in drilled holes. Tightening the fastener causes part of the anchor to expand against the hole wall.

They may be used for window grills, railings, shelves, signs, equipment brackets, and air conditioner supports. Their capacity depends on the anchor design, concrete strength, hole depth, spacing, edge distance, and installation quality.

This is one of the most important lessons in any anchor bolts guide: don’t select an anchor from diameter alone. Use the manufacturer’s load data and installation instructions. Anchors supporting columns, canopies, stairs, or other safety-critical loads should be specified by an engineer.

3. J-Bolts and U-Bolts

J-bolts or hooked anchor rods can be placed in concrete to connect wall plates, posts, or base plates to a foundation. They’re often planned before the concrete pour because their position and embedment must match the structure.

U-bolts wrap around pipes, tubes, or round structural members. They’re common in plumbing, drainage, mechanical supports, and pipe-hanger systems.

Typhoon resistance depends on the complete load path from the roof down to the foundation. A 1/2" or 5/8" J-bolt may appear in a project, but its size, spacing, embedment, and reinforcement must come from the structural design.

4. Carriage Bolts

Carriage bolts have smooth, rounded heads and square necks. The square section grips the wood and helps stop the bolt from turning while the nut is tightened.

They work well for pergolas, wooden gates, outdoor furniture, timber frames, and other wood-to-wood or wood-to-metal connections.   1. Metric or imperial measurement system

  2. Bolt diameter

  3. Bolt length

  4. Thread pitch or threads per inch

  5. Material, coating, and strength grade

  6. Matching nut and washer requirements

Bring an existing sample when possible. You can also use a thread gauge or ask the supplier to confirm the pitch.

Never force a nut that stops after the first turn or two. An M10 bolt is 10 mm in nominal diameter, while a 3/8" bolt is about 9.53 mm. They’re close enough to confuse by eye, but their threads aren’t interchangeable.

Buying a matched bolt, nut, and washer set reduces the chance of cross-threading. It also helps ensure that all parts use a compatible measurement system and strength level.
